Sugar and Celiac Disease…related?

sugarHello everyone!  Sorry I have been out of touch lately…let me start by going back a few months…

So about 5 months ago I ended up in the hospital with severe dehydration and a bacterial infection (which they never figured out where it came from or where it was).  This happens to me about once a year, sometimes more.  Usually during the summer, so I am figuring that the heat has something to do with this.  But anyway, I haven’t felt 100% since I was in the hospital, I went through a few months where I thought I was dying, couldn’t get out of bed most of the time and I had absolutely no energy.  They checked my thyroid and did all kinds of tests…everything came back normal.

So I ended up losing 10 pounds, which I really didn’t need to lose and even today, I am still losing weight…can’t gain.  But…I put myself on a plain diet, got rid of all my sugar and caffeine…and I mean ALL sugar!  I also upped my probiotics and I am now finally starting to feel better and I can go out and do things.  I am not 100% there…but really close!

So, they other day….I had a small bowl of ice cream…gluten free…for the last 3 days my stomach has been in knots and I am not feeling quite as well as I was…I am also starting to scratch again.  I have noticed when I have sugar, my stomach, chest and back itch…I just want to rip my skin off.  SO…I am now assuming that my problems over the past 5 months were all associated with sugar.  As long as I’m 100% sugar free…that includes fruits…I seem to be ok…I add a small amount of sugar and I am down and out for a few days.

Anyone else have these issues?  Is it related to celiac?  These are the questions that I am determined to get the answers to!!!

Hi Elizabeth, I don't know if the two are related, but my Mom (gluten intolerant) has had similar issues to yours. She struggles with Candida overgrowth and has also had to completely cut out sugar in order to control it. This may be what's happened with you…especially in light of your increased probiotics (another great way to control candida).
Have you seen this blog: http://www.dietdessertndogs.co...
The author talks a lot about her gluten-free anti-candida diet and has lots of great information as well as wonderful recipes.
I'm glad you're feeling better. It can be so disheartening to feel so sick and tired all the time. All the best,
    Gael

Thank you very much for your reply. I guess I should have put in the blog that I already know it's Candida. I had written about my candida a few times in the past that it just passed my mind to put it in this article. Yes…Candida is a pain in the butt to deal with!! I would like to know if this a common thing with people who have celiac or a gluten intolerance. I am wondering if the candida is a side effect of not having wheat or gluten or if it's something to do with the villi or what??? I hope your mom is doing well!!

I'm concerend that I have many symptoms that are Celiac Disease Related/Caused? I also have Candida, Hep C Virus with Cysts on my ovaries.

Here's an article that ties together celiac, candida and sugar:
