Proof that Celiac’s should “go with their gut”

Ya know…I go out to eat somewhat on a regular basis.  I try not to, but my schedule sometimes makes it that I am going out to eat somewhere at least once a week. The thing is this…I always try to go to the same restaurants.  I try to go to large, franchise type restaurants, like Outback, Longhorn’s, etc.  I know that these restaurants will take care in making sure that my meal is gluten free.  I will venture out to other restaurants every so often, but I am always very careful.  I always “go with my gut”.  There are many times that I look at a menu and think “I am never going to find anything that is gluten free on here”.  Then I talk to the waiter/waitress, try to explain my issue and I always go with something very plain.  Then when the meal comes out…I go through it with a fine tooth comb…I look at the texture of the food, any spices on it, you name it…I look at it.  If I think there is something on it that may be gluten…I call the waiter/waitress over and I ask them about it.  Nine times out of ten….my gut is right!

Now…this guy…needs a lesson in humanity, food allergies and possibly even a medical lecture.  I was so ticked off when I read this…I think blood pressure rose to “heart attack numbers”!  This guy is an absolute idiot.  He wrote the following on his Facebook page:

“Gluten free is B***S***!! Flour and bread have been a staple of life for thousands, THOUSANDS of years. People who claim to be gluten intolorent dont realize that its all in there disturbed liitle heads. People ask me for gluten free pasta in my restaurant all the time, I tell em sure, Then I serve serve em our pasta, Which I make from scratch with high gluten flour. And you know what? nothing, NOTHING! ever happens! People leave talking about how good they feel gluten free and guess what, They just had a full dose! Idiots!”

Yea!  Can you imagine??  Who knows how many people he really hurt with his stupidity.  One of the problems with this, and there are sooo many, is that most people…and I’m one of them,  when they get home and have “issues”, they just deal with them…they never call the restaurant or anything.  And I think we really need to start doing that…we need to let the restaurants know that we were contaminated…so it doesn’t happen to someone else.

So, this brings me back to my point…”always go with your gut”..if it doesn’t look right, talk to the chef…and double check everything.  If someone had done this with this guy…he would have got busted!  I know I would have busted him!

You need to know your food when you have this disease…you need to know how your food should look…how gluten free pasta looks and tastes, and yes it is different than wheat pasta…there is a difference!  You need to know your spices and what they look like, so when you order a piece of chicken, you can tell if it’s a spice…or a dusting of flour.

There is so much more to this disease than just “eating gluten free”…you need to do your research, learn about foods, learn about gluten and wheat and the biggest thing…learn to cook!  The more you cook gluten free, the more you learn about gluten and gluten free foods!

I wish you all the best of luck and…honestly…I hope this moron gets what’s comin’ to him!

Thank you for linking to my little letter! I've been blown away today by the traffic to my little family blog after posting this! 4000 hits and counting! I'm so happy that maybe someone out there got a new perspective on what those of us who eat “gluten-free” are dealing with and why it's not as obvious as a nut-allergy!
I also agree with you on trusting your gut. There have been MANY times when we've been out somewhere and I will send a dish back to the kitchen because the chicken looks “dusted” with something. I am super clear with most waiters or waitresses about WHAT gluten is… it's not just wheat or bread!
    Thanks again!! Blessings!

If you can't determine menus about a restaurant or café before leaving your house, then telephone ahead. Perhaps make certain you have a couple of choices in the area, just in case a 'gluten free' restaurant is just claiming the certification to increase patrons, but knows zero about gluten free. Trust me, it happens more than you might think.
